Hypersonic SQL (HSQL) works absolutely great--includes the tools and the
source code to build for your platform.

... But MySQL is only free if you license your application under the
GPL.  If that isn't the case, you have to pay as much as $495/copy for

In contrast, nobody is charging fees for PostgreSQL or Firebird.
