can't get Tomcat 5 to work..
Frances Del Rio - 19 Aug 2004 18:51 GMT I downloaded Tomcat 5.0.27 from jakarta.apache.org/tomcat the other day, but I can't get it to work.. followed all instructions (changed 8080 to a higher no. in sever.xml, but when I try to get to it in browser I get a 404.. ) I included path to root dir of Tomcat folder in env vars.. when I run startup.bat in DOS prompt DOS prompt simply disappears, what does this mean??
I recently downloaded JRE and SDK from java.sun and have been compiling and running java apps for a few weeks now w/no problems.. but can't get this tomcat thing to work.. and where can I ask? why is there no Tomcat newsgroup?? ok, would appreciate any suggestions.. thank you..

Frances There has now been two votes to get comp.lang.java.server-side (I think that was the planned name), to cover issues about server-side Java, but there hasn't been enough interest when the issue has gone to vote, so no group has been created, and the discussion is spread on various web forums and comp.lang.java.programmer.
Check from archives of news.groups when was the last vote; the next time the group can be proposed is 6 months from closing of the previous vote. If you're interested in getting the group, remember to vote for it the next time the issue comes up for voting.

Frances Del Rio - 24 Aug 2004 14:59 GMT actually, there IS a tomcat ng, but it has exactly three articles in it, which is also surprising.. borland.public.bes.appserver.servlet-jsp-tomcat.. (actually it's a borland, only for borland folks??) ok.. thanks again.. Frances

[quoted text clipped - 22 lines] >> you.. am surprised there's no java server programming ng already... >> thanks again.. Frances There is a mail list for Tomcat that contains a lot of info. The archive is at http://mikal.org/interests/java/tomcat/archive/list. ------- Remove underscores from e-mail address.
Frances Del Rio - 25 Aug 2004 15:36 GMT I know about the Tomcat mail list, I was subscribed to it for a few days last week, it was crazy, my inbox got FLOODED with e-mails most of which did not pertain to anything I was asking.. I much prefer newsgroups than a situation where, you know, instead of seeing posts in another server practically all the posts get sent to yr e-mail inbox, this is really not very practical.. maybe I will subscribe to it again at some point if I see I have no choice, but I really think there should be a java server programming newsgroup.. thank you for yr response.. Frances

You can read the tomcat-user list (and thousands of others) via a newsgroup interface at gmane.org.

[quoted text clipped - 4 lines] >you.. am surprised there's no java server programming ng already... >thanks again.. Frances How the Usenet (the newsgroups system) works is that if someone comes up with an idea of a group that needs to be created, s/he arranges a formal 'RFD' (request for discussion) message to be sent, in which a rough charter (what topic area the group would cover) of the new group is described. During the discussion period (from 2 weeks to 2 months, I think) the charter still can live -- even the proposed group name can change. The initial RFD message is sent to "relevant groups", so often groups where it is suspected it would be noticed by people interested in the group. So, RFD message for comp.lang.java.server-side could be expected to be seen at least in comp.lang.java.programmer, most possibly also in comp.lang.java.db (but perhaps not in comp.lang.java.gui).
After the discussion period (if the discussion didn't completely deem the group worthless), starts the voting period. Again, a message indicating the start of the voting period (aka CVF message, "Call For Votes") is sent to relevant groups. Votes are conducted by "neutral third parties"; there's an (unofficial?) organisation called UVV (Usenet Volunteer Votetakers) which has provided people to handle most (all?) of the recent votes.
The criteria to pass the vote is that a group must get at least 100 more for than against votes (yes, it's also possible to actively oppose creation of a group), and at least 2/3 of the total valid votes must be for the group creation.
Oh, yes; the above info is only valid for the "big-8" groups, so hierarchies comp, humanities, misc, news, rec, sci, soc and talk. For 'alt' hierarchy and regional hierarchies the rules vary by hierarchy.
For even more details, see: http://members.fortunecity.com/nnqweb/ncreate.html http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/faqs/big-eight.html
And as for getting the group (comp.lang.java.server-side) created; the latest vote failed on June 24th, 2003; so it'd be possible to start a new group creation process with the RFD round, as the required settling time after the last failed vote has passed (6 months it is, I think). The results from the previous vote were 85 for and 5 against, so there just wasn't enough interest.
