Where is Visual Cafe??

Thread view:
Mr. Steve Burrus - 11 Jul 2004 19:37 GMT
Hi all, I am steve Burrus, a relative newbie to this particular
newsgroup, although I have been a member of the
"comp.lang.java.programmers" group for quite a long time now! Listen, I
posted this question to them some time ago, but never got back a
satisfactory answer/response, so here it is again : Just where can I
obtain a nice copy of the old Visual Cafe Java IDE application that I
remember working with some years ago???!!

I remember what some of the responses were from the
"comp.lang.java.programmers" newsgroup, that it is quite old and archaic
and has definitely "outlived its' usefulness" by now, but STILL I would
like to sort of "dabble" with it a while longer, so if anyone knows
where it is available to download/install, I would like to hear about
it. Thanx in advance.

You can't.  Borland bought the Visual Cafe assets along with the
company that owned them.  Besides, VCafe was falling further and
further behind in features as time went on.

You can get a free copy of JBuilder Foundation at
http://www.borland.com/products/downloads/download_jbuilder.html by
scrolling down to the "Foundation" link.

Symantec sold it to a company set up by BEA - WebGain - which went
bust a few years ago.

It's sort of like asking for Turbo Pascal 5.0 instead of Delphi,
though. You are much better off getting Eclipse, JBuilder or something
modern like that.

And isn't it odd that BEA set up the company.. but Borland ended up
buying it...?  I still never quite understood that...

It's not that strange: AFAIK Symantec "sold" it in the first place
because they decided to remove non-core products (ie. anything that
isn't related to virus, firewalls, and system tools). However, at that
point, Visual Café was apparently a terrible bugfest it was hell to
support, and of course the components of WebGain Studio weren't
integrated at all (neither WebLogic Server, the modeling tool or VC),
which meant fewer benefits than if you went for Oracle's suite.

And it wasn't Borland who bought it, but Together, which was a
separate company at the time, though they got bought by Borland six
months or so later. Why they bought it? Well, they at least were
focused on dev tools. But I don't think there are many in Together or
Borland who has any idea why it was bought. Perhaps it was a very
cheap aquisition? Perhaps they needed the developers? (Unlikely since
major Together development occured in St. Petersburg.)

Thank u very much gentlemen, I "get"/understand your rather overwhelming
message to me, that Visual Cafe is DEAD FOREVER!!! To make a very apt
analogy about it, it represented the old "horse and buggy" era of
transportation (maybe that should be "buggie"--full of "bugs"--in VC's
case :)) when right now the mode of transportation on the ground is very
fast cars, and in the air, the space shuttle!

Wow, really?  Try ebay.  ebay has everything.  VC team was bought out
by WebGain, later bought out by TogetherSoft, which was then bought by
Borland.  Not sure why you'd want a copy of VC now, given there are
plenty of better tools today which are relatively cheap or free.  VC's
dead: Long live VC. :)

THAT's right.. Togethersoft was the part of the puzzle I forgot
about..

I have Visual Cafe with the Java application included, I would be more
than happy to burn you a copy of it.

Why the hell would anyone want Visual Crashe back again?  A really great
day using that sucker was when it froze up only twice.

Just download JBuilder Personal; it's free.
