Eclipse Installation Problems

Thread view:
Iain Toft - 04 Mar 2004 22:34 GMT
Hi,

I've been struggling for several hours now to get Eclipse to work. I
am suffering from the popular "JVM Terminated. Exit code=1" problem.

I have the following configuration:

-XP Pro - Service Pack 1
-Sun's Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build
1.3.1_10-b03)
-Working from eclipse-SDK-3.0M7-win32.zip

I have redirected the eclipse.exe to use the installed JRE's javaw.exe
via the -vm command line switch to no avail.

I have deleted the lock file and also the entire workspace direc (it
recreates again on every attempted execution).

I have also tried with a new JVM 1.4.2 however this caused a JVM error
(access violation on USER32.DLL, a documented problem for newer
JDK's).

I have also tried with an older version of Eclipse with the same
problems.

I have also tried using javaw.exe from C:\jdk1.3\bin with the -vm
switch.

The jvm is not writing any errors files (his_err_xxx.log files or
similar).

I have had the same problem on three seperate machines which would
indicate extremely bad luck on my part or a common mistake?

Any help would be appreciated! I'm becoming disillusioned before I've
even seen the IDE. :(

    Eclipse 3.0 requires j2sdk 1.4.
A problem with Windows is the ordering of the PATH environment
variable.  Assuming that %SystemRoot%\bin is early in your PATH,
eclipse might be trying to run Microsoft's JVM (although that is not
supposed to be in XP).  Anyway, look for java and/or javaw in
%SystemRoot%\bin and rename them if need be.  Make sure that eclipse
is actually trying to run Sun's JVM.
Open up a command prompt and run java -version; this will tell
you what JVM is being used to start eclipse.

As I stated in my original message I have tried Eclipse with a recent
java virtual machine and am certain I'm not using the Windows javaw as
I specified the sun javaw.exe with the -vm switch. As it happens I
actually did rename system32\javaw.exe for good measure, to no avail.

Still stuck.

It might be best to turn to the eclipse mail lists and/or
newsgroups for this.  There is a lot of information there.

Just on a hunch, are you using the cygwin unzip program to extract the
archive? If so, try with the native XP extractor, or WinZip. I've had
issues with (I suppose) line-ending translations or such that affected
eclipse in the past.
