hi
i have jdk1.5.0_06 in my machine and was using eclipse 3.1 as
IDE .since i wanted to install a newer version I dloaded and installed
eclipse 3.3  in a separate folder without uninstalling the orher
version.
when i click on the eclipse.exe of the new version it loads the splash
screen and asks for the workspace dir to be set.after that however it
disappears and doesn't open the workbench.an error textfile  is
created with message that Access violation is caused
this is the error msg...
'An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine:
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x20818d78, pid=1384,
tid=160

also it gives the name of thread as
Current thread (0x008597e8):  JavaThread "main" [_thread_in_native,
id=160]

is there any way around this?I am confused because i am able to work
with eclipse 3.1

I had a similar problem after I installed eclipse 3.3.1 AND run
software updates from eclipse Help option.
Now I am running eclipse 3.3.1 clean without ANY updates successfully
over JRE 1.6.0_02
Maybe you downloaded updates? Maybe you need later version of JRE?

I'm pretty sure Eclipse needs the JDK.

Both of those versions are from before a significant security patch from Sun.
  You want at least Java 6u3, if not the current version, 6u4 for Java 6.
(Java 6u10 is also available under Early Access.)  For Java 5 I believe you
need at least update 13, but update 14 is the current release.
