When will Java *really* become open source?

Thread view:

What's Sun's deadline for making Java opensource?

Thanks,

Last article read (about 3 weeks ago) said that they have no specific
deadline or timeline, just that it would be "sooner rather than later".

I saw that article too. I have regained my interest in Java, but I'm not
going to try to use it until I can install Java as a package on my OpenBSD
system. It takes way too long to build the Java system from scratch on my
computer.

The standard Linux distro's don't run on your system?

Well they certainly don't run on _mine_.

I'm not an OS geek. I mainly have Linux (Debian and Ubuntu) and Java
works fine. I also have an OpenBSD box that's a "black box" to me (It's
important, I have a skilled BSD geek who looks after it). In general I
find that OpenBSD is absolutely secure, bullet- and bomb-proof. I'd run
everything on it if I could, if it weren't for the significant (to me)
problem that Java just doesn't want to co-operate with it.

I have no idea why. My BSD geek looks sheepish whenever I raise this.
But in simple practical terms, I can't shift my Java hosting to BSD. If
I could, life would be better.

uh-oh, that's like telling people: "hey, why don't you switch
religions?"  :-).

Don't watch it? Why take issue with a one-off build time? Is it because
Sun are not being co-operative with their license in this regard?

I am skeptical that building Java is as easy as running 'make install'.

That too.

OpenBSD has a linux-compatibility mode, but I don't use it because of
security issues. I also have stopped using X-windows because of security
issues.
