High level view of eclipse MDA support

Thread view:
Marc Dostie - 31 Jan 2006 19:25 GMT
Hello All:

I was just considering the totality of the different eclipse
tools projects (GEF, EMF, UML2, JET, etc.) and it struck me that it
seems as though the community has gone out of it's way to make
sure there is an angle for tool vendors by *not* bundling these
projects together in an 'MDA' project (yes, I know there's MDDi and
GMF, but they seem to be layers above EMF/GEF that again target tool
implementers).

I know the charter of the eclipse project is to be a tools platform,
and not an 'end user' targeted tool per se, but it seems to me
that the projects have gotten 90% of the way to a standards
compliant MDA modeling tool. Why not just put the other 10% into
an official eclipse project and run with it? Worried we'll put
IDE vendors out of business? (eclipse has already done that ;-))

EMOF is basically ecore, I'd guess that with that kind of influence,
an eclipse MDA project would become the de facto reference
implementation of OMG MDA.

I know anyone _can_ do it, just wondering if it's not being done
for the philosophical reasons I've stated. If there *is* an open
source eclipse based MDA implementation project, please allow me to
remove the egg from my face and kindly send a URL.

Thanks!

Marc, I just did a search for MDA, out at 'Eclipse Plugins',
http://63.247.81.213/eclipse/search.jsp?query=mda

I came up with Eclipse plugins that maybe of interest:

*Motion Modeling Modelling*
provide a full MDA environment (integrationg androMDA for code generation)

*GMT Tools*

*ocl4java Code Generation*

*iQgen 2.0 Modelling*
Based on the principles of OMG's Model Driven Architecture

*Merlin Generator Code Generation/Modelling*

*open Architectureware Eclipse plugin Modelling*
The architectureware project provides a suite of tools and components
assisting with model driven software development built upon a modular
MDA/MDD generator framework implemented in Java(TM) supporting arbitrary
import (design) formats, meta models, and output (code) formats

*java.tri Code Generation/Modelling*
Version 0.5.5 Open source J2EE code generator/MDA tool.
