the wireless toolkit, which I think you are referring to, is pretty
clear that it requires Windows XP. It does not even work on other
Windows variants.

Good point! But this is 2.3 BETA. For 2.2 you get:
System Requirements - Software
Microsoft Windows XP or (unsupported) Linux-x86
JavaTM 2 SDK, Standard Edition (J2SE SDK), version 1.4.2 - if you plan to do
actual development, or JavaTM 2, Standard Edition Runtime Environment
(JRE), version 1.4.2 - if you only plan to run the demonstration
applications.
To download the SDK or JRE you want, go to
http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html

I trust that is a developer enable device, if not MIDway won't help.

The device is re-programmed to have Midlet upload menu. I did upload midlets
to my phone from Windows, but this requires me to seek for a free windows
machine :) I need to upload midlet straight from Linux.
