I've managed to do it, to answer my own question, it was easier than I
thought.
I just installed JDK1.5 and then downloaded
eclipse_sdk_3.1_linux_gtk_x86_64.tar.gz and then unpacked these files to
/usr/share/eclipse
I did not need to tell eclipse which jdk to use. I thought that some
configuration would be needed but obviously not.

I spoke too soon, when I try to compile a program eclipse crashes, can
anyone suggest how I can find the reason?
When the program crashes it stops just showing a dialog box with title
'error' and contents:
/usr/lib64/jvm/java/bin/java
-Xms64M
-Xmx256M
-jar
/usr/share/eclipse/startup.jar
-os
linux
-ws
gtk
-arch
x86_64
-launcher
/usr/share/eclipse/eclipse
-name
Eclipse
-showsplash
600
-exitdata
160005
-data
/home/martin/workspace/
-vm
/usr/lib64/jvm/java/bin/java
-vmargs
-Xms64M
-Xmx256M
-jar
/usr/share/eclipse/startup.jar

You may want to ask these questions in the Eclipse newsgroups at
news.eclipse.org
Say eclipse.platform or eclipse.newcommer
