sessioin vs cookies

what exactly the work of httpsession and cookies.

i know that session is to maintain the communications betw browser and
the server.
i want to know that, where exactly httpsession and cookies are used if
possible with example.

HttpSession can and usualy do work with cookies. A cookie contains
session ID. The session
data is stored on the server and needs ID to be accessed. HttpSession
can avoid using cookies, I believe, but I have never tried that.

If you use a session without cookies, then the session ID is placed in
the URL.

To the OP, a session is used to maintain state in the server for that
user between browser calls, not communication.
