2nd time around with help for java
Don - 30 Oct 2005 14:16 GMT This is in reply to the help offered the other day (I'm just not sure if anyone looked back at my reply or I'm hopelessly out of luck)
Thanks for the quick replies. I must tell you that I'm slightly above the "point and click" level of computer knowledge. My wife is somewhere below. Please accept my apologies for not understanding some things you say or suggest.
It appears (according to my wife) that it hangs up permanently (it never used to).
I did think about drivers and the drivers for the video card and monitor are all up to date.
Someone suggested looking at the Java console. I can't seem to find that. I have opened the Java Control Panel and have explored the options within it. The only thing I changed was, I clicked the box for "show console", although I can't seem to find the console. As soon as I can I'll try to post the settings as was suggested.
It was also suggested I check "device drivers". Which ones other than video card and monitor should I check?
There was mention about checking the "operating system kernel". No clue on this one (remember, point and click?)
Just a little background on the computer and problem. The video driver is S3 ProsavageDDR. My wife hangs out on a site that chats and plays games. She's done this for the last year or two. Recently things weren't operating well (games got slow). The people at the site suggested she install Java. We did. Now in the past two weeks she's been locking up, she's told me that images remain on her screen (although I haven't seen them, but then again I don't play her games). I have spent sometime on her computer just web browsing, email, and such but haven't experienced the things she's seeing. I hope this helps and I thank you for your time and patience. We "point and clickers" would be lost without people like yourselves. Thanks again, Don...........

I don't think you said what browser she was using to view the applets but, assuming it is a relatively recent version of Internet Explorer, you get to the Java Console but clicking on Tools in the Internet Explorer menu. If you do that, you should see an option called "Sun Java Console"; just click on it.
There won't be anything useful in the console at this point, just instructions for commands that you can run. Ignore those. You (or your wife) need to try running the applet that is causing the trouble. As it runs, it may write some information to the console. The information will likely be completely meaningless to you but it could be very helpful to Java programmers like those of us who read this newsgroup. Use the "Copy" button in the console to help you copy and paste the information in the console to a newsgroup post and submit the post to this newsgroup with an explanation of what you were doing. For example, "We were at URL http://abc.com playing Poker when this junk got written to the console."
That should be enough information to help someone start to figure out what is going wrong.
If nothing gets written to the console, which is entirely possible, include that fact in your post too. That may help rule out some possibilities; it's entirely possible that your problem has nothing directly to do with Java.

Don - 30 Oct 2005 16:21 GMT Rhino, Thanks for your help. I did copy the console when given the option but how do I past it somewhere? I tried to paste it to my desktop but the option to paste wasn't there. When I choose copy where does it copy to? My wife hangs out on a game site called pogo. This is where she was told to install Java. I've run ad, spy boot, I just scanned the computer at Trend Micro online scan. She uses the AVGAS virus program. In all the scans no virus was found. Trend Micro found 12 spy objects but they were all cookies. She's on the computer now, I'll try again to copy the console when it pops up. Is there a way to activate the console. So far the only time I've seen it is when it pops up on it's own. I haven't been able to make it appear. Thanks again for your help, Don.............

I don't know what newsreader you are using but if it is the newsreader built into Outlook Express, just click on "New Post" like you normally do when composing a post. Then go to the Java Console in IE, like I explained before, run the applet that seems to be causing the trouble, and click on the "Copy" button there. Then, go back to your new post and click on Edit/Paste in the post; that should paste whatever you copied from the console into your email.

I haven't been able to make it appear. > Thanks again for your help, If you give me the URL where this pogo game can be found, I can see if it plays okay on my PC. That won't help you directly but it might give us a clue about the nature of the problem. Or not.
Is there any particular point during the game at which she has problems or does the problem happen regardless of how long she plays or what she does during the game? For example, it's possible that she only has problems when she tries to record a high score in the high score table; then again, maybe she has problems as soon as she starts playing pogo.
Also, can she play other games at that site without difficulty or do they all have the same problems as pogo?

I tried to paste it to my desktop but the option to > paste wasn't there. When I choose copy where does it copy to? I believe there's a bug in java 1.4.x where if you open the console, you can only copy/paste the stuff that appears after you've opened it. So you need to have the console open before you run the applet.
You should also be able to select it all and use the usual copy key combos (ctrl+ins or ctrl+c).

Don - 30 Oct 2005 16:55 GMT Think I sent this elsewhere the first or second time. Hope it makes it. I copied the console. Here it is and thanks again, Don............
