I used to use c++.If you want to get input you write
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
int main(void)
{
int a,b;
cout<"Please input a & b";
cin>>a>>b;
count<<"what you input is a="<<a<<",b="<<b;
return 0;
}
Can I use java to get the input from the keyboard like this without
using the GUI?

Yes!

import java.io.*;

public class test2 {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        try {
            InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(System.in);
            BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(isr);
            String str = null;
            while ((str = br.readLine()) != null) {
                System.out.println(str);
            }
            br.close();
        } catch (IOException ioe) {
            System.out.println(ioe);
        }
    }
}
