'Load an image, scale it to thumbnail
size and save it as JPEG (Thumbnail.java) '

Will probably set you in the right direction.

No worries.

Cool..

My thanks go to Marco Schmidt, who wrote them.

They helped me clarify about 20 separate
aspects of dealing with images.
[ Way excellent! ;) ]

I hadn't seen that page either.  When I was writing an application awhile
back for handling images I was used the sun JAI API examples and went from
there.  BTW, in your research have you come across any good examples for
dealing with jpeg2000 images?  I have a web application that is currently
using the lizardtech plugin for displaying them in a web page but it doesn't
work in Netscape.  None of the other jp2k plugins I have found have the
level of functionality of the lizardtech plugin.  Ideally, I'd like to write
an applet to display jp2k images (and allow panning, zooming, printing) but
as it's for a prototype proof of concept system I don't want to spend a
great deal of time on it (I've got seven other projects I"m responsible for
and just recently was charged with lead programmer responsibilities in my
dept.)

Thus far I have stuck with relatively common
image formats, but you might have a look at
ak's 'imagero' reader, <http://reader.imagero.com/>.

(I have been meaning to check it out
myself, but I won't have the time for
quite a while yet)

If you're lurking ak, does imagero do jpeg2000?
(I am not even sure what that is.. metadata?)

I've looked at Imagero (but not in quite awhile) and it didn't meet my needs
at the time.  I've used the Sun ImageIO package for handling jpeg 2000
images with some success though.  The images that I am dealing with are very
large (~50 meg) tiff images of aerial photos.  The photos have been
converted into jpeg "thumbnails" and lossless compression images in jpeg
2000 format for viewing in a browser.  Converting to MrSid format is another
option but I'd liked to avoid proprietary formats.

According the the website Imagero doesn't support jpeg 2000 images yet.
Here's a decent page on Jpeg 2000.
