How do you get a JVM to work with WinXP SP1 + IE6.0 SP1?

Thread view:
Phil Holland - 14 Mar 2004 21:03 GMT
Environment:
 Windows XP Pro SP1
 Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920
Java:
 Java 2 SDK 1.4.1_02
 MS JVM 5.00.3176 (25 Mar 1999)
IE Advanced Settings:
 Java (Sun):
   Use Java 2 v1.4.1_2 for <applet> - Yes
 Microsoft VM:
   Java console enabled - No
   Java logging enabled - No
JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled - Yes

I don't want to use MS JVM, as I'm trying to test some Java applications
developed using JDK 1.2+.

Currently I'm getting missing Java messages whenever I open pages
containing Java applets, so I've had to use Netscape 7 to view those
pages instead.

I've just moved from Win2000 SP2 to WinXP Pro SP1, and I had no problems
running Java applets with IE6 in Win2000 SP2.  Can anyone offer any
suggestions as to how I can get these applets to work with WinXP?

Thanks.........Phil Holland

Have you rebooted since selecting the Sun JVM?

Yes, and I've also tried adding/subtracting the JDK folder in the Path
variable, but nothing has solved the problem yet.

Go into the control panel. There is a Java applet and one of its options
is to set the JVM for IE.

I've already selected both IE and Netscape in the Java Plug-in applet in
the Control Panel.  However, I now have a suspicion that my recent
install of Visual Studio 6.0, which installed a copy of MS JVM, may be
the cause of my problems.

I'm still no closer to solving it though.

That reads to me like..
"I was trying to fix a rattle in my car the
other day, and shoved a wrench into the flywheel.
It did not fix the problem - and now my arm hurts"

>..which installed a copy of MS JVM,

Aaargh!  I thought MS was prevented from supplying
that abomination by court order.  I wonder if the
determination was "MS will stop supplying the MS
'JVM' with the *IE* OS component"

I'd give it odds of 400:1

Uninstall any software by MS that has the
word 'Java' in it and you will probably
get it to work..

Surprisingly I only installed VB6 and Visual FoxPro, and definitely not
J++, but it still insisted on installing MS JVM before allowing the
installation to start.  In my defence I'm a SAS software developer
working on Windows and UNIX/Linux, who occasionally works with VB, Perl
and Java interfaces to SAS, so this isn't the first time MS has caused
problems.  I'm no supporter of MS, and I don't have MS Office installed,
much preferring to use OOo, and occasionally Lotus SmartSuite, instead.

Still I will uninstall MS Visual Studio and MS JVM, try to re-install
just the VB and VFp bits again, and try accessing my Java applets
through IE again. I'll let you know if it works or not.

Hope you get it sorted.

Please do, I'll be interested to hear how you go.

I'm back in business, but it took a few failed attempts, and I'm not
100% sure what fixed it:
(1) Uninstalling of Visual Studio had no effect, so I reinstalled it
making sure I only installed VB6 and VFp6.
(2) I installed Java JRE 1.4.2_02, but it had no effect.
(3) I decided that Windows Update might sort it out, so I installed the
critical updates, and XP updates that looked relevant, including:
 - cumulative security update for IE6 SP1 (832894)
 - security update for Microsoft VM (816093)
Something in the update worked its magic on my system!  Whatever fixed
the problem, I can now run Java applets using Java JRE 1.4.2_02.

Aahh, windoze.  You gotta love it, huh?   ;-)

[ I am currently working on a way to 'clean'
the MS VM of dangerous classes (that is, the
MS ones) and rebuild it, in the process I
have struck some interesting MS gotcha's ]
