Is there are FAQ for this group (and the other java groups) somewhere?
If not, would somebody like to maintain a FAQ? It seems that a number of
questions that keep getting asked over and over again. Top offenders:

Creating exes
NoClassDefFoundError on running hello world
Best IDE

Other stuff that everybody should know before posting:

Search google before posting.
Don't cross-post.
We don't do your homework for you.
Make sure you understand what you are asking for. A vague question will
not get you any help.
Post compilable code.
If you don't post compilable code, post the *exact* error message you
are receiving.
Don't ask newbie questions in comp.lang.java.programmer.

c.l.j.p. has a mini-faq..

But it really needs expanding.

I am interested in putting one together
to host off my site, would be interested
what others think.

I think a FAQ would be great for the group, for everyone involved. Is it
possible, once such a FAQ is drawn up, to have it posted to the newsgroup
with regularity so that there's a decent chance anyone that skims through
the first page or two would hit it?

One should never generalise.

It's helpful to post the exact error message whether the code you post
is compilable or not.
