J2ME question

Thread view:
Ben Thomas - 26 Sep 2003 05:26 GMT
Hi all,

I've read that J2ME is one solution for people who want to develop apps
for high end PDAs. I have downloaded J2ME but I can't see how I would
get a java app onto and run on my Palm Tungsten T. What are the
necessary steps?

Any help much appreciated.

First off, remember one thing if nothing else: J2ME is *not* a technology,
it's a term used to refer to a *group* of technologies for handheld,
embedded and settop devices.

Now, on to your question. You're looking to use the MIDP (Mobile
Information Device Profile) to write applications for your Palm device. I'm
not sure what you've downloaded, so could you clarify by saying precisely
what you've downloaded?

As for provisioning your device, I'm not completely family with WME but I'm
assuming that you installing the JAR/JAD file for your MIDlet suite onto
the device, probably via the desktop software.

Sun offers a PRC converter tool that makes converting a Mobile application's
jar and jad file into a .prc file easy. You can then install the .prc file
onto your Palm or Treo device with the HotSync desktop software. Look for
this article at the web address shown below.

MIDP for Palm OS 1.0: Developing Java Applications for Palm OS Devices at

The article at this address describes  delivery and installation of midlets
via OTA (over the air) provisioning.

Excellent! Thanks for that. I hope that doesn't just work with MIDP, as
I want to use Personal Profile (which is different right?).

My understanding is that MIDP is best suited to low end PDAs and small
mobile devices like mobile phones, whereas J2ME Personal profile is
better suited to high end PDAs, which is what I want to develop for.

Very different. They're two separate profiles build on top of two very
different VMs (MIDP builds on the KVM [16-bit processor, 128-256k RAM],
which the Personal Profile builds on the CVM [32-bit processor, 2MB RAM
minimum]).

Personal Profile isn't supported on Palm Tungsten. MID Profile is.
