See http://mindprod.com/jgloss/gettingstarted.html

Get an introductory text book.  Don't try to learn it purely from the
Sun JavaDoc.

Look at other people's code, especially for simple programs.  Start
with simple modifications, and work up to more complicated ones.
Before you know it, you will be able to write your own programs.

Here is a good website, it's run by a Sun researcher.

http://www.javapassion.com/

This is the beginning class, it is free:

If you go through that class and have questions, ask!

What works best for me is to do something and fail, then come back to
it a while later and then it makes sense.  Java isn't that hard.
