generally how much time does one need to clear these exams ? Is it
necessary to have years of real world experience in programming or you
can just do away with it by cramming for a few months.

You can cram for a few months (took mine 9 years ago), and if you
pass, you will feel dirty and become suicidal.

I don't agree. It was good. I was excited.
However it has not too much connection with real world experience. It
mostly revisiting roots, organizing your knowledge about general ideas
and API and so on.
It also requires not required in real life ability to quick read a lot
of stupid sentences extract possible sense and answer quick based not
on your experience but it supposed to be based on question asked. Very
often answer is not what you think and even not in suggested choices.
So, you answer quick and close enough.

Try this: http://www.javaranch.com/roundup.jsp
but it's much better then exam questions and have sense.

Anyway, it was good experience. Never feel sorry. Only glad.

Alex.
