'best' way to browse and search java online documentation.

Thread view:

Hi,

I'm using my own editor and am working mostly shell based.

Currently I'm using Firefox and http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/
for browsing the java documentation.

Unfortunately The layout is a three frame layout and it seems, that I
can't force firefox to search only in one of the frames (The 'All
Classes' - frame) so any search seems to start in the top left (Package
list).

Sometimes I'd also like to know which classes cotnain a method with a
certain name (e.g. 'getImage()').
http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api also desn't seem to be the best
front end for this kind of searches.

What do you use or suggest for browsing the java documentation efficiently?

I'm mostly interested in solutions not requiring an IDE.

Thanks for any suggestions

n

I use Firefox and am happy enough with it.  Two things
you may have overlooked: The "NO FRAMES" and "Index" links
near the top of each page.

Also, the right click menu in a frame has some useful options, such as
opening the frame in a new tab.
