Java Web Start Icons, please register your preference.

Thread view:
Roedy Green - 24 Mar 2008 15:25 GMT
I commissioned a Java Web Start icon for public use from Ahasoft.com,
e.g. to mark JNLP files in listings, to mark JNLP links, to decorate
esssys about Java Web start. The artist has given me three designs to
choose from:

please have a look and tell be which one you like best:

http://mindprod.com/jgloss/image/start_java_1.png
http://mindprod.com/jgloss/image/start_java_2.png
http://mindprod.com/jgloss/image/start_java_3.png

One concern is how it will look in small sizes.  Just looking at the
size they gave me, the spring version tickles my sense of whimsy.

The winged version looks a little too subliminal.

The coffee cup a little too mundane.

ROFL!

I'm afraid they just look like winged arses, especially #2 with its
depiction of some curly brown ejecta!

And in that context...

...this looks like the cup is 'letting rip' too, having ignited it!

I'm sorry - that probably says more about me than the images.

Perhaps I could ask him to change the colour of the spring so that
rude image did not spring so immediately to mind.

Or replace the spring with No 3's flame, rendered in either kerosene's
yellow-white or hydrogen's pale blue flame.

Yeah, I'd be inclined to see it as an unfinished project. Big brown
butts with wings? don't think so... The cup seems a bit too
grade-schoolish.

just my opinion...

I think all three are clever distillations of the principle of Java
Web Start. I also think that all three are ugly. I don't mean that
they are "bad"; just that I find them unappealing. I would be
interested to see some other examples of the designer's work in order
to decide whether my reaction is to the singer or the song. Could you
post a URL to some other designs by the same designer?

May I also suggest that if you want us to compare multiple images you
make it easier by providing some form of image album? JAlbum
<http://jalbum.net/> provides a free, flexible way of producing
thumbnails and images.

Despite the likely impression given by my negative remarks above I
value your project to publish a Web Start icon and the Canadian Mind
Products Java & Internet Glossary.

I don't know how many designers they have, but you can see other works
by the same company at http://www.777icons.com/

The cost can vary drastically.  I am paying $60.  Another estimate was
$1000.

I am buying the right to give the icon away.  It would cost  half that
if you just want it for your own use or in your own programs.

Unfortunately I agree with other posters here.  "Flying butt" was the
first thing I thought of.

I'd like something like this:

Also consider making a custom Icon for your app.  Use the same icon on
the website for download.

What a shame Sun has already trademarked that one and is extremely vigilant
about Java-related logos that look too much like theirs.

That is too bad, but I can see why Sun would do that.  With no way to
control who might be using it or in what context, Sun might associate
themselves or their brad with anyone (porn?) at all.

I guess I'm now going with "use your own logo."  Everybody gets their
own for their own app.  Seems best that way.

Since 2006, the Duke is "Open Source"

https://duke.dev.java.net/

as a symbol for the Java technology, the Duke is a lot better than a coffee
bean!

Bye.

Sun has made it very clear we ordinary folk are not permitted to use
their coffee cup logo or variations on it.

When I gave instructions to the artist, I asked him to be sure the
coffee cup looked nothing like Sun's.

If you could get the artist to cahnge the bean to look like a bean -
it's a half of a "egg" (whatever a 3d ellipse is called), the one you
have now are too round. The part with the divide is actually flat and
the back is round.

Here's an example

How about the coffe cup being inverted and the flame coming out of the
inside of it? That's definately different ;)

Maybe going for a more stylized instead of a cartoony look would be more
appealing (also, fewer colours).
