What do you mean?

Do you mean that you set the content-type to that
on an XLS spreadsheet, then push out
- an existing XLS file?
- or an XLS file generated dynamically?

Try assigning the XLS file-type to OpenOffice.  Maybe
it can read MS' spreadsheet format better.  If OO also
gets 'black' images, perhaps you should look more
closely into the images themselves.

BTW.
- The word 'I' should always be Upper Case.
- It helps the reader, to write acronyms and
abbreviations, like JSP, as Upper Case as well.
