IRC chat client that is not an applet, or html based.

I am currently working on a web-application, and we are currently
using jPilot as an IRC chat client on one of our pages which is an
applet. We are currently looking for something new since jPilot is
pretty outdated. I have been searching around for a client that maybe
uses AJAX, or Flash instead of an applet, without any luck and was
hoping someone on here might be able to help out.

OK.. that would effectively remove the need for any
client-side 'run-time'*, but..

* Assuming you ignore the browser engien that runs the JS.

..why Flash, as opposed to..

..a better applet, or JWS launched application?
