Who benefited and who was hurt by the Iraq war.
Benefittees
1. Russian, China, India. The USA has all but bankrupted itself,
allowing them to gain a relatively brighter spot in the sun and more
world influence.
2. Oil companies benefited by the artificial shortage, allowing them
to gouge consumers. They also benefited from the astounding
inefficiency and consumption of the war machine. the US military is
the biggest consumer of oil in the world.
3. anti American extremists. By resorting to torture, banned weapons,
targeting children etc. they have all the propaganda they need to
convince young men that America has no right to continued existence.
4. Bigots of all stripes. They have used to war to bash every
religion, race and sexual orientation.
5. General Electric, Halliburton and other military contractors that
were able to sell shoddy goods, at inflated prices, without any audit
controls.
6. Right wing politicians who were able to shovel boatloads of cash to
their corporate supporters in the name of emergency.
Those harmed
1. the populations of Iraq and Afghanistan. They have had their
property confiscated or destroyed. They have lost millions of family
members, children. They are impoverished. Their land is turned into a
chemical waste dump including depleted uranium, a teratogen.
2. the wildlife of the war zone.
3. the taxpayers of American who primarily funded the madness.
4. The relatives and loved ones of soldiers injured or killed.
5. the soldiers suffering from mental illness, disability and
suicidally relentless conscience.
6. those kidnapped and held incommunicado in torture prisons
throughout the world.
7. Me. I am sick to death with this war. It gives me nightmares. I
so furious at the a.sholes who are creating so much misery.

You have the right to your opinion and the right to express it.
But please find another more suitable forum than c.l.j.p !

Roedy, what does this have to do with Java programming? Did you post it
here by mistake?

Mostly agreed. Except for the "wildlife" part - it's a desert dude. Not
much in the way of wildlife there, I think. :-)
That said, is this *really* the place to discuss it?

Iraq used to be called "Mesopotamia" -- between the rivers, or the
"fertile crescent". You have it confused with Saudi Arabia. It would
not compete with Kansas, but as middle eastern nation go, it is
considered lush. The wildlife areas are mainly salt marshes.

I stand (well, sit) corrected. I guess we're entirely agreed then. :-)

Try searching (web, libraries) for pictures of the Marsh Arabs and their
way of life. It looks lush & gorgeous, but probably was hot, humid and
mosquito-filled but lets ignore that - go look. Just look before 1991
and post 2004 because Saddam Hussein happened to them in the mean time.
Here's a sampler: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marsh_Arabs

One hates to add to this thread, but you don't know much about deserts.
