desktop.open not working, no exceptions or errors

Thread view:
someone - 18 Oct 2007 06:40 GMT
I am using Desktop.open(File) and on certain machines it works fine. I
am using JRE 1.6_02. Both machines are WindowsXP with the latest
updates (as of today). The appropriate extensions are mapped. When I
try to desktop.open() on a txt file it works properly on one box, but
the other box notepad.exe (the application associated with .txt)
doesn't get launched. Are there any other parameters that I can look
for on the non-working machine? Unfortunately there desktop.open
doesn't throw any exceptions, it just gets called and continues.

I've also tried desktop.edit with the same results.

What does Desktop.isSupported(Desktop.Action.OPEN)
report for the machines where it does *not* work?

Weird, I didn't post to javakb.com. Must be the pulled it from this
post.

Yeah, desktop.issupported returns true and
desktop.isactionsupported(open) returns true also. Yesterday I tried
it on a solaris box, 3 other xp boxes and a vista box and it works
fine on all of these machines. I think something is screwed up with
the xp laptop it doesn't work on and I'd love to figure out what it is
in case this problem happens in production.

I'll keep my eyes open for any solutions or things to look into. If
you have any recommendations please let me know.

Thanks!

Top-posting?  Confusing (to me) but not weird.
Please refrain from top-posting in future.

No, of course not.  You posted to the usenet newsgroup
comp.lang.java.programmer.  Available at 'all major WITUNs',
including Google groups, and JavaKB (which happens to be
the WITUN of (my) choice at this moment).

Please do enough research on 'usenet' to understand
why that statement is nonsense.

In this instance "nonsense" is a technical term, literally meaning, "devoid of
meaning in the real world," for those not familiar with Andrew's style.  Thus,
the assessment is literally and provably true.  Understanding why the
statement is nonsense leads to illumination.
