Hi, I am using Mandriva 2007 (linux) and I have an application that
uses Portuguese. Under 1.4.2, buttons, labels, tables, menu items,
etc., all displayed correctly.
When i run it under 1.6, all of the Portuguese accented characters are
displayed as little squares. What do I have to do to get the
application to use (for example) one of the postscript fonts that come
with Mandriva?

I'm not a Java font expert but I think Java requires TrueType fonts even
on linux. You can load fonts from a file or your application jar.

Experiment with http://mindprod.com/applet/fontshower.html
to discover the names of the fonts available or either platform to
Java and exactly how they are spelled.
Java 1.6 normally gives you access to the native fonts on a platform.
In Linux IRRC that includes the PS fonts, but in Windows only the
OpenType fonts.
Perhaps the easier way to solve the problem is to find a
Portuguese-supporting font naturally available on both systems.
