Off Topic: What's with the MI5 persecution spam?

What's with the MI5 persecution spam? It seems to be on almost every
newsgroup I visit.

I thought it was some guy trying to sell his own newsgroup reader that
filters his spam out.

There /is/ something like that going on (unless it's a Joe job), but
"MI5Victim" has been doing this for ages. He appears to be a sincere
paranoid.

From what I gather, it was originally a (rather long) conversation
started by a paranoid freak who thought he was being bugged/whatever by
the MI5. Now, I believe, it's continued by some even-more-paranoid
freaks who believe that the world needs to know about this deep-dark
conspiracy.

It seems that they finally discovered the c.l.j.* newsgroups. Is nothing
safe from conspiracy theorists anymore?

You mean that anyone, even the MI5, can read whatever you post on
c.l.j.p.?  Is nothing private anymore?

There's a cabal of conspiracy theorists promulgating propagandistic
disinformation to distract us from the real issues.

You see, Paul? There *is* a cabal - and they've found you.

What MI5 persecution spam? I haven't seen anything matching that
description.

I saw it once, and then I filtered it out.  I find the disinclination
of others to do likewise...  disturbing.

I saw one message and immediately set the filter rule. Unfortunately, my
newsreader does not seem to support filtering after the headers have
been downloaded, resulting in killing several threads.

That said, I'd say that everyone who could filter it has done so. The OP
appears to be using Google Groups, which, IIRC, does not have filtering
capabilities. The fault is not the users but crappy newsreaders
(especially WITUN's- er, that should probably be WI'sTUN (?) ).

Thats an advantage of Agent - enter a kill pattern, click Apply and it
rescans all the downloaded headers, removing matches.

I was taught that the apostrophe is acceptable in plurals in the
following cases:
* Numbers (e.g., 1960's or 1000's)
* single letters
* acronyms
* words where plurals do not normally exist (e.g., This paper has too
many and's)
* Symbols (all of your &'s should be and's)

I can dredge out my grammar book sometime to show it to if you really
want...

I read that you should only use apostrophes to form the plural of
acronyms if the letters are terminated by periods:

WITUNs
W.I.T.U.N.'s

I guess it depends which style guide you follow.
