Hi!
Yes, there are many books and I agree you should read a book about Java
basics before you try to create a GUI. E.g. Java Tutorial and afterwards
the Swing-Tutorial.

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/index.html

There are for sure many more books for absolute beginners, but I dont
know any in English. Sorry. Try the tutorial at first.

bye, Ralf

I found "Beginning Java" by Ivor Horton (WROX, now apparently taken over
by Hungry Minds) to be fairly painless. A major benefit is that it is
written on the assumption that you'll work through the book using only
your favorite text editor and the Sun J2SE SDK.

In addition, if you haven't already downloaded the documentation set for
your SDK, do so, install it and learn to find your way round it. As well
as tutorials, its the documentation for all the standard classes in the SDK.
