JNLP splash screen isn't!

Thread view:
darrell.berry@gmail.com - 12 Aug 2006 20:00 GMT
Running JRE 1.5.0_06-b05. JNLP works fine for most things, but can't
get a splash screen to work...

from the jnlp file:

<jnlp codebase="http://www.domain.com/base/" href="it.jnlp">
<information>
   <title>What It Is</title>
   <vendor>Ku24 Limited</vendor>
   <description>More about it</description>
   <icon kind="splash" href="splash.jpg" width="562" height="294" />
   <icon href="OM.gif"/>
   <homepage href="http://www.ku24.com"/>
   <shortcut online="true">
     <desktop/>
     <menu submenu="OtherMaps"/>
   </shortcut>
   <association extensions="gml" mime-type="application-x/gml"/>
 </information>

blah blah

and with splash.jpg indeed at:

http://www.domain.com/base/splash.jpg

I don't get anything resembling a splashscreen, but the app launcher
DOES change the icon in its progress bar dialogue if and when I change
the OM.gif file, so its defintely got access to that directory and is
picking up changes to the JNLP file. I'm bamboozled -- people say lots
of bad things about Web Start, but I can't find anyone who simply can't
get this to work. I'm not missing soemthing stupid like also needing
something in my actual application to do this am I -- I thought the
whole point was that the JWS loader displayed the image while all the
rest was being loaded and started up...?

any help appreciated, and if you are interested I can send the whole
config file and/or its real installed path...

thanks

Uhhh..  please refrain from top-posting.

I sure would.

But let's be clear on a few things - just FTR.
- Please don't waste our time with placeholders URL's
 or psuedo-code.  If you have an actual problem, quote
 actual code and actual URL's.
- Please don't waste our time on usenet with secret
 URL's - these groups are here for the benefit of the ages,
 and secret URL's do not serve that purpose. (+ same
 reasons as above)
- Not even the 'secret URLs' was enough justification
 for you to contact me by email.  Stop that!

Now - you will probably be thinking you cannot express
your problem 'in public' because of the 'confidentiality'
of the URL's or images.  Wrong!  (99.95%) of the time.

A close facsimile of your JNLP, using a solid *red*
JPG for the splash for example**, might show
exactly the same behaviour

(later)  After being sucked into checking a few
more things, ..

Hint:  Try loading your splash image in a
 core Java application or applet.

[ ** Then make the 'solid red' JPG mentioned above,
using the same image editor, and check the red JPG
produces the same result.. ]

..report back the results.

Thanks for clarification on group policy (or your preferences -- either
way, thanks for taking the time). I will do as you sugegst and report
back.

The latter*.  There is very little usenet 'policy', and
no actual rules (thankfully).

* Though you might find the gerenal attitudes I
expressed to be 'commonly held, though
occasionally bitterly argued..'.

That's the productive course of action.   ;-)

I appreciate the difference -- I've been an (occassional) UseNet
participant since '92, and it's actually kind of refreshing after
engagement with more 'modern' tech forums to be back somewhere where
people feel able or indeed *responsible* for laying down the law of how
*they* want things to be, rather than how the people who make money out
of the site feel it should be run! Apologies for stepping on any feet.
Respect!

(drums fingers impatienlty)
..you about ready to 'gpo public' with some URL's?
In the meantime.

Scrap that.  I stupidly saved your 'confidential' image
out of my operating system component and that made
it 'microsoft compatible' (by introducing an unsupported
start of file marker).

Is your image a JPG of around 90Kb with 164 colors?

Perhaps the reason your splash is not showing is that
it is too large to download before the app. arrives.
How big is the application, BTW?

I did a screen grab and made it into a GIF (no lossyness
with just 164 colors).  That GIF clocks in at just 35Kb.
