Eclipse vs VS.NET

Thread view:

Hello developers,

Does any one know where can I find a third-party evaluation which
compare both products?

Thank you very much in advance.

Eclipse is free so you don't need any special evaluation version. The
same could be said for VS.NET if you know the right people but I'm sure
there  are legit evals for it (maybe even on MS's site; did you check
there?).

The "express" version of Visual Studio is free.

I can't direct you to any full evaluation, but in the past two years
I've used both programs quite a bit in an educational capacity. I find
that I really like both of them. Which you use depends primarily on
what you do the most. Both are available for free. Not in the form of a
full copy of Visual Studio .Net but as standalone free versions. If all
you need is C# or C++ you can find Visual C# and C++ Express editions
for download for free via microsofts website.

If you spend a lot of time with Java Eclipse should be your de facto
choice because it is simply the best Java IDE there is hands down. It's
plugin, project management, code editing and documentation support is
second to none. And if you'd like to use other languages with it there
may be a set of tools you can download that add support for that
language to Eclipse. For example, you can install the CDT (C
Development Tools) package for eclipse and have seamless C/C++ support
in the program.

My favorite thing about eclipse is that it has good SVN (Subversion)
support in the form of a plugin called "Subeclipse".

Another candidate you've left out for comparison is Monodevelp, an open
source IDE for .NET apps.

Not an official evaluation but:

The "products" are not comparable. If you are writing Java or
associated technologies like J2EE or servlets then Visual Studio is
useless.

If you are just trying to compare the features in an IDE then you need
to compare the multiple products implied by VS.NET to a similar range
of IDEs that are available for Java related development.

You try to compare a donkey with a bicycle!
