The two most popular ones seem to be Eclipse and Netbeans. Both are
mentioned frequently on this newsgroup. If you do a Google Groups search on
those two product names, I'm sure you'll find lots of remarks about each as
well as comparisons to help you choose which you'd prefer to have.

agreed on Eclipse and Netbeans, but jCreator and jEdit are also worth a

I think Sun provide a reasonable list of what you should expect in a
Java IDE here

don't think jCreator or jEdit come close.
