Does netbeans use swing? It looks very fast..I can't believe it is all
swing...

Yes. Swing is much faster in Java 1.5 due to tighter integration with the
underlying OS. I'd stopped using Swing in favor of SWT exactly because
earlier versions were slow; now I have no issues using Swing instead.
