This message is directed at Chris Smith, as I assume he is the
administrator of JINX (http://riters.com/JINX/index.cgi/); it's posted in
this newsgroup, because I couldn't find his e-mail address anywhere to
contact him directly.

Recently, I wanted to make a direct link to a section on the page
http://riters.com/JINX/index.cgi/Suggestions_20for_20Asking_20Questions_20on_20N
ewsgroups
;
specifically, the section titled "If you get an error message, repeat it
exactly.". I know with MediaWiki, each section head has an <a name="foo"/>
tag associated with it which allows you to directly link to a section, but
there doesn't seem to be any such tags for this Moin Moin wiki.

Is there a way to modify the wiki engine to allow for linking directly
at sections? It'll probably make it than pointing people to the page, and
asking them to search around for the section themselves.

Yes, I set up the current incarnation of JINX (the previous one was Jon
Skeet's work, but it has gone dead).  My email address is correct on all
of my posts to this group.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your question.  I looked
briefly and saw something that looks promising at the bottom of
http://riters.com/JINX/index.cgi/SyntaxReference:

   [[Anchor(anchorname)]]

I will play around with it.  Since it's just used as an example of a
macro, there's nothing that says exactly how it works.  Hopefully, it
works in the way that would be intuitively obvious.

Ah! I only looked at the body of your posts; I had not bothered to check
the headers.

This seems to generate tags of the form <a id="anchorname"> (without the
closing tag). I had thought anchors were created solely via <a
name="anchorname"/>; I guess I need to brush up on my HTML.

With this new information, I see that Moin Moin DOES automatically generate
anchors, though it gives them names like <h4
id="head-c2a5e0825ffec81ab36351b053002a6fdb208fd7">, which to me sounds like
they might change every time you edit the page.

So it's probably best if we, as contributors, manually add anchors using the
above macro should we desire to link to specific sections of a page.

Yes, this seems to work.

   Good. =)

On a different topic, is there something like MediaWiki's "Talk" meta
page, for the contributors to discuss changes made, or to be made, for a
given page? I'm thinking, for example, that we should remove the "How Should
I Ask Questions Here?" section, since it's basically a table of contents,
except that it needs to be manually maintained to actually reflected the
contents of the page or else it'll be out of sync.

I figure if I just remove this section, it might be seen as
wiki-vandalism, and it'll get restored, and I'll get banned or something.

No.

Yes, the bulleted list should be removed.  You don't need to worry about
discussing things first.  If changing something makes the page more
clear to you, then do it.  If it's reverted, then you can worry about
why.  I don't even know how to ban someone, though I suppose I might
figure it out rather quickly if someone starts posting large amounts of
spam or profanity or something.
