Is there any Java sofware about that can work out the frequency of a sound
played through a microphone?

Hi,

you simply need to do a Fast Fourier Transform (commonly referred
to as "FFT").  A reasonably fast implementation can be done in less
than 50 lines of code I'd say so you don't really need a "Java
software" nor an "API" nor a "framework".  You simply need
an "algorithm".

I coded such a beast years ago (in Java, in one of my first Java
projects) to extract RPM informations from recordings of
car engines.

Google for Java and FFT and you'll find what you need...

But be careful Bruce Lee, for those harmonics sometimes
know kung-fu ;)
