Some links to a single article at javaworld.org (or something like
that) that doesn't work (host unknown sort of error). Obviously out of
date.

Yes!  Take a look at xnap, http://sourceforge.net/projects/xnap/ or phex,
http://phex.kouk.de for starters.

I checked those. They seem to be applications, not libraries.
