Graphics/Java

I might soon be starting a project where I will have to write an
application to 'spot the differences'  images - the images come from
MRI scans.

It looks like I'll have to do this in Java, as the code needs to go
cross platform, and have a nice UI etc (and I don't really want to
write it in C!)

So, knowing that this is coming up, I was wondering about Java packages
that might help - if necessary, they could be commercial products,
although they would have to be in the £100s rather than £1000s of
pounds for my department to 'like' them!

Any thought?

If you are using DICOM or TIFF files, you could look at ImageJ.  It has
many built in image processing features and a plugin architecture for
what you don't find.  ImageJ is OS.  http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/
