Solar Eclipse March 29 2006

Thread view:
swrsteph@gmail.com - 17 Feb 2006 00:19 GMT
Hi All,

On March 29, 2006, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible from a
few lucky parts of the Earth. We have started to gather information and
advice about this event. It is available at:

In addition, we have created the Eclipse-2006 WORLD BLOG at:
You can read about previous experiences, share your thoughts and post
your own pictures!

Don't hesitate to give us feedback. We are actively working on the site
so that it will contain as much information as possible for the week of
March 29. Even better: help us with advertising it by creating a link
from your site.

Enjoy solar-eclipse-2006.info !

I'm sure is great news for astronomers, at least those in "a few lucky parts
of the Earth", but it has nothing to do with the purpose of this newsgroup,
which is Java programming.

Wouldn't it make more sense to post this in an astronomy newsgroup? Or at
least prefix it with an {OT] to indicate that it is off-topic?

comp.lang.java.softwaretools is probably better for Eclipse posts ...

You're being funny, right? The post has nothing to do with the IDE called
Eclipse, he's talking about the astronomical event that the IDE is named
after.

I suspect it ended up here because we show up as #1 on the list of "google
groups" which mention the word "eclipse".

Ooooh, I just /love/ Google...

That's a pretty plausible theory, in my opinion.

I don't think you can blame this on Google as much as on the user who didn't
realize that his hits had nothing to do with the solar phenomenon. It
probably never occurred to him that there was an IDE named Eclipse so he
didn't bother to verify that his hits had anything to do with natural events
like solar eclipses....

Why don't you like Google?  Just curious.

It is a matter of too much power accumulating.

Technically, they impress me. They invent new kinds of products, not
just more of the same.

see http://mindprod.com/jgloss/google.html

there is SO much going on there.

With Google the web search engine I have no problem.

With Google the /ad powered/ search engine I still have no problem.

With Google the arrogant, secretive, MS-style, would-be monopolists, I have
some severe reservations.  They are already exhibiting power without
responsibility[*].  I don't want to see more of it.

This next paragraph may strike you as OTT, even paranoid -- fair enough, it
probably is[**] -- but it reflects how things look to me today.

<paranoia>
My feeling is that their strategy is to own the (non-corporate) Net.  Stealing
Usenet is hardly a major offence in the overall scheme of things, but it gets
my goat.  Keep an eye on how much of the (non-corporate) world's data in held
on Google disks, under (only) Google control.  My feeling is that Google are
hoping to acquire more than an acceptably small percentage.  Is it possible
that they could "steal" the (non-corporate) Web in the same way as they have
stolen Usenet ?  I don't know, but my hunch is that that is where they are
aiming.
</paranoia>

"Just trust us, we're /Google/"...

[*] "responsibility" in the senses both of being held responsible, and of
acting responsibly.

[**] I hope so, anyway..

For the Google Map you just copied the code from the NASA page!
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEgoogle/TSE2006google.html

Also your page doesn't work in every GM supported browser...

For really interactive solar eclipses Google Maps and a lot more you
should visit:
http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/SolarEclipsesGoogleMaps.html

By clicking anywhere on the map you'll dispaly the local circumstances
of the eclipse.
