mindprod.com hits

Thread view:
Roedy Green - 12 Jan 2006 00:03 GMT
For some reason yesterday was by far the highest hits ever recorded at
mindprod.com.  I wonder if anyone knows why.  Was it mentioned in the
news somewhere?

Do you log referers?

I have not looked at the log in a long time. Perhaps it is time to
dust off tools to look at it.

How many more hits than usual?

It would be funny if it were an amateur hacker attempt at a DOS attack and
they FAILED cause you just have too much bandwidth.

I usually get about 600-700 a day on the home page. Yesterday there
were over 1500.

Maybe Google got around to your site in its cycle. You have a lot of
pages, so if a spiderbot paid a visit, following all links, you'd
definitely see a peak.

But not to the home page which is where I track hits, even though the
Java home page and the unmaintainable code page get even more hits..
If Google or other search engine visited, There would just be a lot of
hits in general, and a hit to even the obscure pages.

Google will likely spider me more frequently now that I am generating
a sitemap for it to let it do that more efficiently..  See

Yeah, I do see lot of search results related to java, returning
mindprod.com pages near the top, in Google.

Earlier, search for java stuff did not return mindprod.com pages that
frequently. Now its pretty much more frequent to see mindprod.com on
the first page.

I keep getting myself all the time now when I use Google.  I think
somebody there secretly jostled something with their elbows because
they liked my left wing politics.  I have sent them about a dozen
ideas for new products and faster search engines which might have
brought me to the attention of some Google human.

It also have Google ads, which logically should tempt Google to throw
more hits my way.

Other thoughts.  I have many small pages that concentrate on one small
topic with links to other popular pages on the same topic.

My pages are internally heavily cross linked. Possibly, google counts
those partially in its rankings as if they were offsite links.

Wouldn't that be funny if they took all my posts as independent links.

We it would certainly explain your high rating ;)

Usenet tends to get mirrored on sites too, especially technical groups.
Those could count as individual links too.

Roedy I think you are seeing a truer hit rate now. People are not just
dropping the link because of the old slow response time.. I know I did
many times. It's a pleasure to visit your site now. Ya know you build a
bigger door you can get more people thru it.

Thanks in Advance...

It doubled yet again to over 3000 hits on the home page.  Something
peculiar is going on.

Ugh - are they real hits - or might it be that DOS attack that I was
[previously] joking about?
