Finally (after 12 weeks) Sun determined that it is a bug.

duplicate bug linked from there.
They say it is fixed in Java 1.6 (Mustang) by a major rework of the image
transformation pipelines.

I wonder if this bug is related to the one where Java Web Start PNG
transparent images on the logo show up black and first then a few
seconds later turn black.

Who would have thought it would take such a big change to remove such little
lines ;-)

As far as I can tell, 12 weeks is a pretty snappy response time for
Sun =)
