Optimising servers

Thread view:
Roedy Green - 21 Nov 2005 19:53 GMT
I was talking to my ISP. He mentioned that Google does optimisation of
their servers, calculating whether to use faster cpus trading that off
against increased electricity consumption vs increased throughput.
Wouldn't it be nice to have so many servers that you had to consider
AC power?

Dunno about you, but I think about it every time I open my bills!  We*
have six computers running more or less continuously, plus several
more "hobby machines" that may or may not be running.  It adds up.

* My husband and I.  Each a PC, each a laptop, and each a server.

I was talking to my ISP, and he told me that he was feeling a tad bit
anthropomorphic today.

Of making better designs there is no end,
