Best Java ever

Thread view:
JS - 18 Nov 2005 09:05 GMT
Hi All.
I was in a strange thinking mood last night and I was just wondering what
peoples opinions were on the best Java program that people have come across?
The only qualifying rule is that it is written entirely in Java and when I
say best it could be, least bugs, good or unique implementation of features
or just a great looking GUI.
All opinions welcome and even some website links or images if you want.
Just for fun

I like stuff that pushes the envelope.  So high on my list would the the IBM
jikes RVM (research JVM) which is written entirely in Java[*] (but is /not/ an
interpreter, nor in any other way simplistic -- it's a vehicle for cutting edge
JVM research).  Another candidate, for me, would be Jython.

I am not making any comment on the quality of the source code, only
the impressiveness of the final result. And that is Eclipse.

I love eclipse.  I just wish it wouldn't go off woolgathering.  I've
had to wait minutes, sometimes, between when I click on an editing
window and when it finally lets me edit.  Seconds, okay.  Minutes,
wth?

Which version? I had a great deal of trouble with the "pause" until
I moved up to vers 3.1 Haven't really noticed many problems since.

This is 3.1.0.  It's definitely still doing it.

My work machine only has 512MB, though.  I wish it had more, but for
some reason that's the standard here.

Same here.  I have Win2K.  Presumably you have WinXP which would
leave less room for Java.

I missed the original post.

I have designed a windows XP install and tweak guide which can free up many
MB of memory.   It's not really related to Java, but if anyone wants it you
could just email me :)

Are you willing to share it publicly? I would be willing to format it
in HTML and add it to the Java glossary.

Hmm - as long as I got a small attribution :)

Let me revise it and check it for accuracy first.

of course.  The other way to handle it is you post it and I just link
to it.

I do have winXP.  I don't know if it takes more memory, though.

It does.

Email me, and I will send you a tweak guide for saving memory.

Or go buy another stick of 512 Mb ram.

It's the machine provided by work.

At home I have a comfy 2GB.  But if my company's not willing to invest
in a reasonable amount of memory, I'm sure not going to plonk down
*my* cash for it.

Because it's a work machine, I'm also not comfortable tweaking the
settings too much.  Thanks for the offer, though.

Hm, I frequently work with eclipse3.1 on a 256MB Notebook with Linux.
Absolutely no problems, and definitely not minutes. It also is not a
small project, ~1000 classes and lots of supporting files. 3.0 was always
a bit slow (but no minutes either)...

How much ram do you have? I have seen annoying pauses only on
startup.
