Safari and Java

Thread view:
Roedy Green - 21 Sep 2005 04:24 GMT
I don't have access to a Mac machine, but I would like to increase the
Mac content in the Java glossary.

If you have thoughts about what I could say about Mac JRE, JDK,
Safari, or Mac Java development in general please pass them on.
Also any Mac-specific terminology.

thanks. I have added that to the
http://mindprod.com/jgloss/macintosh.html entry.

I was pleased to discover the Mac people have done something to stop
novices from cherrypitting.

What's "cherrypitting?"

Wow... On the metric of "how much information about its meaning does the
term's name convey?", this is the closest to zero I've ever seen.

If I were a window manager designer, in addition to the
"minimize/maximize/restore" actions, I'd add a "center on screen" action,
which would resolve the above mentioned problem.

The problem with a cherry-pitted window is there so way to invoke such
an action.

After I made the post, I had a feeling someone would bring up this issue.
So I'm imagining that there is a taskbar, and that the list of all the
windows appears on the taskbar (like in Windows XP). Thus you could right
click on the widget associated with the off-screen window, and select
"center on screen".

While I'm at it, here are other issues I feel might be brought up:

"If you can do that, then why not just maximize?"

I've had a situation where my firefox, when "restored", would be off
screen. If I maximized it, it would fill up my full screen, but the page I
was looking at it was such that it was annoying to read extremely long lines
of text, so I wanted to reduce the width of the browser window to make
reading easier. But as soon as I would un-maximize, or "restore" the window,
it would move off screen again.

"If you have a taskbar, why not just do 'Tile Windows'?"

Sometimes I have 20+ windows open, and I have them just the way I like
them, except for one of them, which happens to be off-screen. I don't want
to screw up the layout of my 19+ other windows and have to reposition them
after the "tile" operation.

The problem is, the very sort of novices who cherry pit would not
understand or think to use such a tool. They would still go to an
expert for help. You have to PREVENT cherrypitting.

On the other hand, you won't forget what it means.  And further you
will easily find it again with a search engine.
