Why are some Collection methods unavailable to List clas by default?

What is the reason for not having methods like "indexOf" in the
LinkedHashSet class since the elements are sequenced anyway?

It would be amusing trying to make that work if a
LinkedHashSet/LinkedHashMap was in access order mode.
