I have just managed to clear a problem with screen resolution, which
coincidentally (or not) seemed to follow an earlier Java error. I have
another Java error which I have copied in full below.
Could anyone tell me what I need to do in very simple non-technical
terms please(a) to correct this and (b)stop further Java errors. I am
an absolute Java novice and only a little better with win 98.

That looks extremely suspicious to me.
Does it mean that somoene that calls themselves 'java_re'
..built the VM ..using an MS tool.
[ ?!? Did I misread that? ]

Thanks but no, you did not misread it.
I posted the error message log by cut and paste so it should be
accurate.
The unusual thing (to me) is that this error message appeared on the
Desktop and is opened with Notepad - is this usual for Java errors?
Obviously, concerned to know what to do with this - but please in very
simple terms.

Sorry, my bad. That reference to MS VC++ (that looked
suspicious to me at the time) is completely normal.
If I get any further (good) ideas I'll jump back into
the thread.

Not to me.

The build instructions for 1.5.0 do mention Visual C++
(<http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/scsl/build-windows-i586.html>)
I guess Sun has a build system where the maker is identified as
'java_re' (maybe short for "Java Runtime Environment"?).
> [ ?!? Did I misread that? ]
Don't think so. When you hexdump the 1.5.0_04 jvm.dll (in
%JRE_INSTALL_DIR%/bin/client/) you can find the vm_info string somewhere
at offset 0x15F400.

Is this Windows 98 *Second Edition* (Win98SE)? The first version of
Win98 is not supported, see
<http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/system-configurations.html>
If I remember correctly (it's several years since I've used Win98), you
can find out if you're running SE, when you right-click on "My Computer"
on the desktop and select "Properties" from the right-click menu
(probably "SE" or "Second Edition" is mentioned on the first tab).
