java plugin question

Thread view:

Hi all,
I have Win XP Pro running on a Compaq Presario 7360.

I also run 3 browsers at any given time.
IE 6/Netscape 7.1/ Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3

I want to download and install the java plugin for 2
browsers (NN 7.1 and Mozilla Firefox) but not for IE.

I'll explain why i am writing this message;
 About a year ago, I downloaded the SUN Java
plugin for MS Windows web browsers, and then, the virtual lab
environment in my school would not work. THe helpdesk infrormed
me that I had to uninstall the SUN package, and in its place,
download and install the MS Package (msjavx86.exe).
Upon doing so, all seemed fine with the school stuff and etc.

Since then, I added Netscape 7.1 and most recently, Mozilla Firefox.
These 2 browsers are in need of a java plugin, but I don't want to
change the architecture of how IE works, as I don't want to run into
the same issue I mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Any suggestions on how to go about setting up NN7 and Firefox with a
java plugin and leave the IE alone?

Thanks;
Adam

The staff on the help desk are idiots.

You can run both the MSVM and Sun Java not
only in the one IE, but even in the one
browser session, you do not even have
to close and reopen the browser.

[ You do get messages when changing 'must
reboot to take effect' - they're lies, it
works just fine straight away. ]

Oh, and tell the HelpDesk that at the rate
at which the MSVM is being *uninstalled*,
they had better update their software soon.

You're welcome.

I take it your IE is fully sorted now?
Running both the MSVM and Sun Java?

If you need any tips on swapping
between them, pop back by.

Yes, now that you mentioned it, I forgot to report how well it went.
Problem is solved.

I downloaded the SUN plugin installer,
and installed the plugin, then rebooted-
after rebooting, I unchecked the
option to use the SUN plugin in IE, even though
it will work, at least I won't have any
future disagreements with the helpdesk regime.

Firefox and Netscape 7.1 are now java web capable,
so I got what I wanted out of the experience.

Thanks again;
Adam
