Java Virtual mc Launcher err

Thread view:
anon - 25 May 2004 13:36 GMT
Java j2re1.4.204 installed.
I have a mainstream java app, on starting I get a Java Virtual M/C Launcher
, 'fatal exception occured. Program will exit' msg
I can find no err logs. The app icon is shown in the task bar, and it shows
in running processes, but of course I am unable to access the app interface.
How should I track down the err?
anon - 25 May 2004 14:14 GMT
I have started the consol, set logging, but that show nothing

try plain Java.exe

If not even that will launch, see the instructions for failed JDK
installs at http://mindprod.com/jgloss/jdk.html#FAILED

Java.exe
A dos window opens, containing data, but shuts immediately - to quick to
read
Presumably it should stay open?

launch it from a DOS window, then it can't close.

do you know what a DOS box is?  I think they call is something like
"command prompt" now.

In Windows 98 it is called command.com, in W2k cmd.exe

Look in start | programs | accessoris | Command Prompt.

It opens a box and you can type commands into it like

java -jar xxxx.jar

If you do that then the window HAS to stay open since it does not
belong to Java.

I meant I'm unsure of which java commands /switches to use in order to
diagnose my problem applet,
at the command prompt / dos box.
I have allready run yr wassup applet, and the output appears fine, I think

applet, ..Applet?!?

Why is this the first time you have
mentioned it is an _Applet_? *

What is the URL?

* I re-read your posts and most things
you said implied an *application*, a
quite different beastie.

Applets are easier to debug with an URL.
A link to the code would be handy too.

Have a look over this for hints..

I have emailed SI and got no response, checked FAQ's and help file
This java app***? was running fine, hardware/software hasnt been changed
Have uninstalled / reinstalled

An applet runs in a browser, about everything
else is an application.  Applications may use
a Frame/JFrame, or no GUI at all.

I got sent here..
<http://12.24.47.40/sessiontimeout.asp>
..with no further message whatsoever.  :-(

Is there anything stopping you from uploading
the applet and html to GeoCities?

Sorry, I'm obviously missing something here, both links show the msgs in the
right order ie reply under appropriate post.

So, let me just check specifically, when
you look at that link, are you saying that
this line..

"OK, but not sure what I'm supposed to do now?"

..appears after, lower down the page, than this one..

"launch it from a DOS window, then it can't close"
?

True.

... and so may applets.  The use of a GUI is not a distinguishing factor.

<SNIP>

Sun's "The Java Tutorial" at
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/index.html says:

"Applications are standalone programs, such as the HotJava browser. Applets
are similar to applications, but they don't run standalone. Instead,
applets adhere to a set of conventions that lets them run within a Java-
compatible browser."

Also note that a Java program can be written so that it is both an applet
and an application, depending upon whether it is started in a browser or
via java.exe (or the equivalent on other platforms).

OK, I allmost get 'javanese' but still trying to figure a way to trackdown
what is causing this java app(lication) to run, but not display its GUI - or
why/cause of  the err msg -

Well, just like Andrew, I got sent here..
<http://12.24.47.40/sessiontimeout.asp>
..with no further message whatsoever.  :-(

So:
1) I don't have enough information to try it myself.
2) You haven't provided information about your browser.
3) You mentioned an app icon in the task bar, but this appears to be an
applet (because you are apparently accessing it with a browser, although
Andrew and I can't get to it).  I'm confused.
4) You mentioned that "it" appears in running processes, but not what "it"
is.

I don't know that I am smart enough to help in any case, but I suspect that
nobody will be able to help until more detailed information is provided.
 Helpful info (for a start):
 Your OS (including patch level)
Your browser (including version # and patch level)
Your JRE or JDK and version #
Error message - where you are seeing it, and the precise and entire
contents.
What apps, processes, and icons are appearing.
How can others reproduce the results?

Also think about what you might have changed on your system since the last
time that this applet worked.

I don't intend any of this to sound rude or to be a runaround, I am just
starved for information and want to help.

Good Luck!

1) Win2k SP4
2) IE 6.0.2800.116
3)jre1.4.204
4)The java application 'SataRaid GUI' was downloaded from;
Silicon Image home page
http://www.siimage.com/products/sataraid.asp
link at the bottom, 'Download.......etc' opens new window

5) err msg:
Win msg window titled 'Java virtual machine launcher'
msg: 'Fatel exception occurred. Program will excit'

6) The application doesnt run in a browser window
7) When running, which it does, other than the err.msg, it shows an icon in
the taskbar - not a java consol icon - and also the application shows in
'running processess'
I know the application is running correctly, other than its GUI, since It
has launched a couple of times correctly and its internal recorded data
shows all the instances of it starting, even when I got the err and was
unable to access the GUI
( In this instance you should read GUI as window, I call it GUI since that
what Silicon Image call it - am not being funny here)
8) When it was running correctly either a double click, or right click, on
the icon would bring up a window (the GUI) showing Raid status with various
menu options to alter the settings of the raid array (In my case mirror
raid)

9) I'm not sure if the application could be run if you dont have installed a
Silicon Image Raid controler.
I have emailed SI but got no response
10) the only thing I've changed is to uninstall my graphics drivers and
reinstall. I have also tried with my AV app disabled. Uninstall the app,
java and reinstalled

Hope the above may help you to help me,
Regards, David

My first instinct is to contact the vendor.  You tried that.

My second instinct is to remove java, remove the app, reboot, install java,
install the app.  You tried that too.

My third instinct is to install the file on my machine.  I can't risk it, it
just won't happen.  Sorry.   :-(

My fourth instinct is for YOU to attempt to install and run this on some
other machine, preferably one with a fresh installation of the operating
system.  Unlikely, I realize.

The zip file from the web site (THANKS, your latest URL got me there) is 12
MB and contains just two things:  JRE 1.4.2 (consistent with the description
you gave) and an 11.9 MB installer for the app - which I am not about to try.

It appears that this is a Java application and not an applet, so questions
about browsers are probably not relevant.

At this point, I am stumped.  Anyone else?
