Images in text component (emoticons)

Hello,

I'm trying to write string replacement algorithms that ought to
replace small emoticon substrings with ImageIcon's. I'm not sure now
what I need. I probably need a custom subclass of JEditorPane or
better JTextPane...? Or is a a custom subclass of StyledDocument that
I need?

I'm not sure really, can anyone make some recommendations here?

You could use JEditorPane and display HTML content. JTextPane has an
icon substitution method to replace selected text, that might work.
Also my original idea of special characters in the font is not a bad one
either.
