Blog: Enable Dropping into Empty JTables

Thread view:
Shannon Hickey (Swing Team) - 20 Jan 2006 22:24 GMT
Hi there!

If you're interested in the subject, I've just posted another blog on
Swing Drag and Drop. Learn how to enable dropping into empty JTables
with a single method call in Mustang, or a simple override in earlier
versions of J2SE.

All the best,
Shannon

Hi,

long time not seen. Shannon, do you have any intention of taking part in
the discussions in this group in the future and help out with answers,
or do you just want to use the group for announcing your blog?

That implies that the blog itself isn't informative.  I like these
notifications.

Thank you for the comment Monique, and I'm thrilled to hear that you
may have found some of this information useful.

Take care,
Shannon

I consider it impolite to use a discussion group for announcements and
to try to re-direct discussions from the group instead of participating
in the group.

Naturally, I respect your opinion - but mine is different. Can't see
anything wrong with a pointer to a useful-to-know trick (which took a
lot of years to make it into core swing <g>).

From where in the announcement do you deduct such an intention? I'm
pretty sure that you can start a discussion about it here and get
Shannon's attention here as well ...

Relax :-)

I suspect that there's a difference in the understanding of blogs.  They
get used in different ways, but a lot of blogs are designed precisely to
get people to go to one's web site and post comments.  I, too, would be
annoyed at someone using newsgroups in that way... just as I was annoyed
when those dorks over at JavaRanch started responding to every friggin'
post some years ago saying "no one here will help; go ask at JavaRanch".
I will still never use their forum because of that.

I don't think Shannon is doing this, though.

I tend to view blogs as an author-convenient way of distributing
information.  Readers have the option to post responses, but most
blogs don't make heavy use of this capability.  Some do (Bruce Eckel's
blog comes to mind).

Anyway, I didn't see it (Shannon's post) as an attempt to redirect
discussion from the group, although certainly there's that possibility.
I saw it as the announcement of a java-related publication.

I also found the incessant JavaRanch links really annoying.

looks like I missed some of the annoyances by not lurking around here
for a couple of years :-). At least now I understand the terse reaction ...

good to hear.

I'm not objecting to this announcement, or announcements in general on
this newsgroup, but it seems like if the message is (purely?) a notification
of new content on a blog, an RSS feed might be a better medium.

Hi Thomas!

> long time not seen.

Yes, I agree - It has been quite some time. But I've been extremely
busy in the last while :)

> Shannon, do you have any intention of taking part in

To be honest, I actually spend quite a lot of my time working on
upcoming versions of J2SE. As you may have noticed in the past, I try
to get into various forums to post and answer questions when I have
some free time. Unfortunately I haven't had a lot of that for a while.
:(

One of the things that I find important after implementing new features
to make Swing easier, is to make sure developers know about them. The
JavaDoc is one such place to make the methods available, but I think
it's also worthwhile to share directly with the respected GUI
community. Having been active in this group multiple times in the past,
I've met quite a few savvy Swing developers here. As such, I feel this
is an appropriate place to share when I've discussed a new feature, or
even when talking about tricks/tips for Swing.

I've tried to make the subject of my posts extremely clear as to the
topic of the blog to which I'm referring. It's my hope that people will
find the content useful, and not be turned away simply because it's a
blog posted on a different site. However, if there is some consensus
that you'd like me to refrain, or even change the subject/format,
please share with me. My goal is to share useful information.

Thanks for asking, and for the reminder that there's lots of questions
in this group. All the best!
Shannon
