How to enter characters beyond keyboard into JTextField?

Thread view:

How do I enter characters from the keyboard that aren't on the keyboard?
For example if I want to enter the 1/2 character \u00bd.  I thought on
a Winblows machine that you could do that by holding down the ALT key
and then typing a sequence of numbers.  It doesn't and I hadn't tried it
in a long time.

Thanks,

That's how I thought it was supposed to work but it's not for some
reason.  I'll have to play with it some more.

It only works with the numeric keypad not the regular number keys!

Windows is the world's best example of a great idea that was never
implemented.
