drawing outside updater thread / paintComponent

In my travels I've often wondered to what degree java positively sanctions
the drawing on a component /outside/ of the
update()/paint()/paintComponent() scheme.

I know there are ways to grab a GraphicsContext associated with a display
component, and I also know that the jre has a tendency to change the
GraphicsContext out from under you for particular components.

Is there an url that'll give me a bad-idea metric for this?  Thanks.
