Java Forum / GUI / January 2004

Tip: Looking for answers? Try searching our database.

a dissertation proposal! :-)

Hi everyone,

I'm quite new to java, being half way through a one year masters
course in IT.  However, part of the course is an option to develop
some kind of application that people might want to use.

Here is my proposal.  Do you think it can be done?  Are there examples
of it already out there?  Is it really hard (this is good if it is!!)?

Consider a website that needs to be updated periodically with
information about new products/prices or service details.  The best
way would be to back it up with a database? (provided updates are
fairly frequent and any update implies changes to many pages).

Now, It is obviously possible to make a GUI that provided a nice easy
way for non-experts to update information in the database (e.g. enter
new price/product details etc).  However this is not the primary
concern of this meassage.  What I am interested in is this...

Is it possible to contain within a GUI a view of what the website
might look like once any database updates are committed?  I suppose it
would involve putting a  browser (or more than one?) inside the java
application.

Up to you...

Most of what you were saying sounded like
stuff that must be developed every day
..many times.

Your data will most likely be in the form
of simple, controllable html with say, frames
and tables?

A JEditorPane should be able to display such
html quite adequately.  It would be a problem
if you wanted to run JavaScript, Java or such
in the JEditorPane, but most simple html is fine.

No.  Actually it is entirely up to you,
it is your project, after all.
